Here we have a halftone reproduction of a drawing of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Salzburg-born composer who lived from 1756 to 1791 and wrote some of the most performed music in the Western canon. The print dates from around 1913, when halftone printing made it cheap to reproduce artwork in books, magazines and newspapers, so portraits of famous musicians circulated widely to general audiences. The original drawing was copyrighted by Eugene A. Perry, whose name appears in the record, and the image reflects how early twentieth-century readers pictured Mozart long after his death.
