Few objects in this group are as tied to travel as the bone-framed dog sled and whip, shown here beside a spear and knife. In 1818, John Ross's expedition met the Arctic Highlanders, an Inuit community in the Melville Bay region of northwest Greenland, and these everyday tools became part of the record of that contact. Dog sleds allowed hunting and travel across sea ice, and the use of bone in the frame reflects the scarcity of timber in the Arctic. The engraving appeared in Ross's published account, though the date and book title here come from a caption that has not been fully checked.
