Glass and iron glow in this view of the Crystal Palace's exterior, the building Joseph Paxton designed to house the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park. George Baxter, a London printmaker known for color work, issued this image with a note that it was sold at the Palace by special desire of its directors, which suggests it was meant as a souvenir for visitors. The structure's prefabricated design, with its vast glazed walls and barrel-vaulted roof, made it a sensation, and prints like this helped spread its image well beyond the exhibition.
