Picasso's name headlines this Federal Art Project silkscreen, which announces a survey of his work at the Art Institute of Chicago, a museum that spent the 1930s bringing modern European painting to a Midwestern public. The Works Progress Administration employed artists to design posters like this one for museums and cultural events, and the flat, stenciled color reflects the screen-printing methods the program used to produce them cheaply in quantity. A February 1940 date stamp on the back shows the sheet later moved through the program's files.
