Few posters from the Federal Art Project's output announce an exhibition as directly as this one, which promotes a 1936 Chicago showing of Pablo Picasso's work at the Art Institute of Chicago. The silkscreen print was produced under the WPA, the New Deal agency that employed artists during the Depression and turned out posters to advertise cultural events in cities across the country. Picasso was a striking choice for such a campaign, since his modernist canvases were still provoking debate among American viewers at the time. The poster's bold color and flat, graphic layout reflect the medium's strengths, and it stands as a record of how public art institutions tried to draw crowds to challenging new work.
