Bertha Kalich was a Yiddish and English-language stage actress whose performances drew large audiences in New York in the early twentieth century, and this glass negative is one of thousands made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of celebrities, politicians and news events. Bain's studio worked fast, often shooting portraits for same-day or next-day editions, so the plates capture the posed, theatrical style that suited the stage personalities of the era. The record gives no date and the name comes from the agency's own caption cards, so the exact sitting is unverified. Collectors value these negatives as a record of how the city's famous faces were presented to the public.
