The Bain News Service caption places soldiers of Chang Tso-lin's army in Tokyo, though the record flags that title as unverified, so the setting deserves a second look. Chang was a Manchurian warlord who dominated northern China in the 1920s, and Japan watched his forces closely because of its own interests in the region. Bain, a New York photo agency, sold news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives document that trade.
