This glass negative from the Bain News Service shows Marshal Joseph Joffre, the French commander who led his nation's armies during the early years of the First World War, during a visit to Tokyo. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified agency notes, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Joffre's trip to Japan in 1917 sought Japanese naval and military cooperation after the United States entered the war, which makes this a useful visual record of Allied diplomacy in that period. Bain's agency, based in New York, sold news photographs to newspapers, so images like this one circulated widely in print at the time.
