The record names the dancer Anna Pavlova, though the title comes from unverified caption data, so the identification is worth holding loosely. Pavlova was a leading ballerina of the Imperial Russian Ballet whose solo *The Dying Swan* made her one of the most recognized performers of the early twentieth century, and she toured the United States extensively from 1910 onward. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photography agency that supplied pictures of theater people, politicians and current events to newspapers. Its studio-style pictures of stage figures offer a useful look at how celebrity images were made and circulated in that era.
