The only identifying detail in the record is the surname Chamlee, which the Bain News Service noted on the negative or its caption card, though the catalog marks that title as unverified. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photography agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of public figures, performers, events and street scenes in the early twentieth century. Its small glass negatives were made to be reproduced quickly in print. With no date recorded, the picture is best understood within that broader period and that working method.
