The record gives only one identifying detail: the title "Chamlee," a surname that the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, though the Library of Congress notes that this attribution has not been verified. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work from the New York news photography agency that Bain ran in the early twentieth century. Its staff photographed politicians, performers, athletes, and street and news events, then sold prints to newspapers that needed images quickly. Because the glass negative is small, at 5 by 7 inches or less, it was made for that fast, practical news trade rather than as a fine-art print.
