The only identifying detail for this glass negative is its title, Chamlee, which the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card, though the record notes that the name is unverified. George Grantham Bain founded the New York agency, which supplied newspapers with photographs of people, events and places in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives were usually made in small formats such as 5 by 7 inches. With no date or further caption, the sitter and occasion remain uncertain, so the plate is best read as an example of the agency's working practice and the news photography of its era.
