The two women in this glass negative, Francesca and Bertha Braggiotti, are identified only by the caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its plates, so the names are unverified. The Bain agency, based in New York, supplied newspapers and magazines with photographs of public figures, performers and people in the news during the early twentieth century, and its portraits were often made for quick publication. The record gives no firm date, so the exact occasion is hard to recover. The glass support is worth noticing, since it holds fine tonal detail that paper prints from the same plates often lost.
