The record identifies this glass negative only as the "Smith building," a title its original makers wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress has not verified it, so the exact building remains uncertain. It is one of the National Photo Company glass negatives, which were made in the 1910s and early 1920s, when the firm was documenting streets, buildings, and people in Washington, D.C. Glass plates were the standard working medium of that period, and the record notes streaks and blemishes from the aging of the original emulsion, which are visible on many negatives of this age.
