A baseball team called the Modoc is the subject of this glass negative, though the title comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified, so the team's home and players remain unidentified. The plate dates to roughly 1910 to 1926, when the Washington, D.C., firm photographed sports, schools and street scenes for commercial use. Modoc is the name of a Native American people of northern California and southern Oregon, so the team may have been linked to a school or community with that name, though the record does not say. Viewers should also note the streaks and blemishes on the plate, which result from natural deterioration of the original coating.
