Dated July 9, 1924, this glass negative is labeled with the name Noel W. Smith, though the record notes that the title came from unverified data written by the National Photo Company on the negative or its sleeve. The company was a Washington, D.C., studio that produced a large body of commercial photographs in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates later came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings rather than from the photographer's choices.
