Robert M. La Follette, the Wisconsin progressive senator, is the subject of this glass negative, which the National Photo Company dated July 5, 1924, during the year he ran for president on the Progressive Party ticket. La Follette was a long-serving reformer who had fought railroad influence and championed direct primaries in Wisconsin before taking his insurgent campaign to the national stage. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented politicians, officials and public events, produced large numbers of such portraits, and this one survives as an original glass plate, a format that can show streaks and surface wear from age.
