The subject is a building labeled "Barr Bldg." on the negative sleeve, but that title is unverified, so its location and occupant remain uncertain. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. commercial studio whose glass negatives record the capital's streets, architecture and institutions in the early twentieth century. The negative is dated to roughly 1918 to 1928 and entered the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and blemishes are visible, the result of natural deterioration in the original coatings on glass plates of this age.
