A side view of the main building at the Washington Sanitarium in Takoma Park, Maryland, shows a health institution on the edge of the District of Columbia. The sanitarium was run by the Seventh-day Adventist church, which emphasized fresh air, diet and rest as part of its approach to health care. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington and the surrounding region in the early twentieth century. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the age of the original coating.
