Takoma Park, a suburb just northeast of Washington, D.C., was home to the Washington Sanitarium, a health institution run by the Seventh-day Adventist church that emphasized clean living, diet, and water-based treatments. This glass negative, probably made between 1918 and 1928, came from the National Photo Company, a firm known for documenting American cities, landmarks, and institutions for sale as souvenirs. Visible streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is part of what makes the negative a record of its age.
