A glass negative captioned "Richmond Blues" and dated February 22, 1923 sets this view apart on the board. The record marks that title and date as unverified caption data, so the name is best read as a label from the studio rather than a confirmed fact. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, made many views of American cities and everyday life, and its negatives were often captioned at the time of exposure. Glass plates of this age commonly show streaks and clouding where the original coating has deteriorated, so some blemishes here come from the plate itself. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
