Few naval officers of the Spanish-American War were better known than Richmond Pearson Hobson, whose 1898 attempt to sink the collier *Merrimac* at the entrance to Santiago Harbor made him a national hero. This glass negative shows his wife with a son who carries the same initials, R.P.H. Jr. The National Photo Company, a Washington-based commercial studio, made it, and its records date it only to between 1909 and 1919, with the title unverified. Streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from the natural breakdown of the original coating.
