Arriba España," meaning roughly "Long live Spain," is the slogan that gives this lithograph its title and its emotional center. The record places its printing in Bilbao, a Basque city that changed hands during the fighting in 1937, and catalogs the flag as its main subject. Posters like this one were produced in large numbers between 1936 and 1939 by both Republican and Nationalist sides to rally supporters, recruit volunteers, and build morale. Its bold color lithography reflects the fast, mass-produced style of wartime print shops, which needed images that could be read at a glance on a crowded street wall.
