This 1937 lithograph takes its title from Asturias, where miners rose in revolt in October 1934 and government troops crushed them in a bloody repression. Printed during the Civil War, it urges viewers that Socorro Rojo, the Spanish Red Aid relief organization, cares for families today as it did before, and that it must keep doing so. Its subjects include mothers and children alongside military personnel, a pairing that reflects how the war's hardships reached households as well as the front. Red Aid, founded in 1921 as the Spanish branch of International Red Aid, supported prisoners, widows and orphans linked to the left.
