This view shows a house on Marye's Heights, the ridge above Fredericksburg, Virginia, which is titled "Marie's house" in the record and was photographed on May 15, 1864, while it was in use as a hospital. The heights are best known for the Union assaults of December 1862, when Confederate troops behind a stone wall at the base of the slope repelled wave after wave of attackers. By spring 1864, the fighting in the Wilderness and at Spotsylvania had sent a steady flow of wounded north to Fredericksburg, and private homes were turned into wards. The damage around the building is worth noticing, as it reflects a town that changed hands several times during the war.
