Few houses in Yorktown carry as much history as the Moore House, where British and American officers worked out the terms of Cornwallis's surrender in October 1781. The house was also caught up in the Civil War, when Union forces under George McClellan besieged the town during the Peninsula Campaign of spring 1862. The caption card gives no date, but the print belongs to the Civil War Photograph Collection, which points to the wartime years, when photographers documented sites like this one as the armies moved through.
