The Club House and the Morrell Institute, both in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, appear in this view taken after the flood of May 31, 1889. That day the South Fork Dam upstream gave way, and a wall of water rushed down the Conemaugh Valley, killing roughly 2,200 people and destroying much of the town. Pittsburgh photographer Histed made the picture and registered it for copyright, which was a common way photographers of the period protected their work. The print documents the scale of destruction in a community that had only recently been building its civic institutions.
