Few houses in Chelsea are tied to a single artist as closely as 74 Cheyne Walk, where James McNeill Whistler lived in his later years and died in 1903. Whistler painted many scenes along the Thames, and this riverside street became part of the artistic circle that gathered in Chelsea around the turn of the century. The picture belongs to the Joseph and Elizabeth Robins Pennell Collection of Whistleriana, a group of material the Pennells assembled around the painter's life and work. The record notes that its date is unverified and drawn from a caption card, so it is best read as a document of the house as it appeared before 1921.
