Few places in nineteenth-century America were as closely tied to the hope of curing lung disease as Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. In the 1840s, the cave's owner, Dr. John Croghan, brought tuberculosis patients there, believing the cave's cool, steady air would help them, and a house set apart for these visitors became part of the cave grounds. This wood engraving, published in a February 1877 supplement to *Harper's Weekly*, shows that building decades later, when the cave had become a popular tourist destination. Its appearance in a widely read illustrated weekly reflects the public's interest in both the cave and the health claims attached to it.
