The engraving shows the farmhouse where pikes, long steel-tipped spears meant to arm followers of abolitionist John Brown, were discovered in 1859. Brown and his men had stored weapons there while they prepared their raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in October of that year. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper published the wood engraving in its November 26, 1859, issue, a few days before Brown was executed in early December. Newspapers of the period relied on engravings like this one to show readers places tied to breaking news, since photographs could not yet be reproduced on the printed page.
