Most recruiting posters of the period relied on a heroic figure or a patriotic scene, but this one has no picture at all, only a direct question printed in bold type: "Do you realize this?" It speaks to each man one-on-one, suggesting that his individual decision could tip the balance in a crucial moment. Issued by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in 1915, when Britain still depended on volunteers, it reflects the government's effort to shame and persuade eligible men into enlisting before conscription became law in 1916. The imprint names Seargeant Bros. of London and Abergavenny as printers.
