Marking the 167th anniversary of the birth of the Marquis de Lafayette, this glass negative is dated September 6, 1924, the day Lafayette was born in 1757. The French officer served under George Washington in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, and his popularity in the United States made his birthday a recurring occasion for public tributes. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio known for documenting city life and official events in the 1910s and 1920s. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coating.
