Members of the Sons of the Revolution posed before a statue of Lafayette on September 5, 1922, and the National Photo Company recorded the moment on this glass negative. The society, founded in 1876, admits male descendants of men who fought for American independence, and Lafayette, the French officer who served under Washington, was a natural focus for its patriotic observances. The company, based in Washington, D.C., documented parades, dedications and civic gatherings in the early twentieth century. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from deterioration of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
