The subject is a bronze statue of Simón Bolívar, the South American military leader who helped free much of the continent from Spanish rule in the 1820s, set in Lima, Peru's capital. Monuments to Bolívar stand across the region, and this one reflects how Peru honored the man whose campaigns ended Spanish control there. The negative was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that produced views of Latin American cities and landmarks in the early twentieth century. Its glass base is worth noticing, since the streaks and blemishes visible on the plate come from the gradual breakdown of the original coating over time.
