Cologne Cathedral, the Gothic church on the Rhine whose twin spires rise above the city, is the subject here, and the glass negative captures it as travelers and tourists of the early 1900s would have seen it. Construction began in 1248 but stalled for centuries, and the building was not finished until 1880, so by the years this negative was made it was a relatively recent completion of a medieval plan. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that produced views of cities, landmarks and scenery for sale, made images like this one for a broad public. The glass plate has the streaks and blemishes that come with age, which are part of its record as an object.
