Along the Hooghly River in Calcutta, the burning ghats were riverside steps where Hindu families cremated their dead in the open air. The city was still the capital of British India when this scene was recorded, and the image shows a place of daily funeral rites. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm known for travel views, made the negative sometime between 1909 and 1919, though the title came from the company's own notes and has not been independently verified. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, not from the scene itself.
