A transit telescope at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington is the subject here, an instrument fixed to track stars as they crossed a single line in the sky. Observers timed the passage of "clock stars" through the field of view, and those measurements let astronomers check and set the clocks that kept the Navy and the public on accurate time. The National Photo Company, which recorded the capital and its institutions in the years around 1910, made this glass negative sometime between 1909 and 1919. Viewers may notice streaks and faint blemishes, the result of the original coating deteriorating over time.
