The caption names Josie and Bertha, both six, and Sophia, ten, as oyster shuckers at Port Royal, South Carolina, working under a surname that is only partly legible in the record. The glass negative dates from roughly 1909 to 1919, when seafood packing houses along the South Atlantic coast often employed children for long hours of shucking. Reformers who documented such work pushed for limits, which helped lead to the federal Keating-Owen Child Labor Act of 1916, though the Supreme Court struck that law down in 1918. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings.
