The record names only the place, Gibraltar, as the title, and the company's label on the negative or its sleeve has not been independently verified. The British territory at the southern tip of Spain has been a fortified naval base since Britain took it in 1704 during the War of Spanish Succession, and the Treaty of Utrecht confirmed its cession in 1713. The negative dates to about 1909 to 1919, when the National Photo Company was producing many travel and scenic views, and the glass may show streaks and other blemishes from deterioration of its original coating.
