The title on this glass negative reads "Spechr Band," most likely a misspelling of "Specht's," the name of a dance orchestra led by Paul Specht in the 1920s, though the record itself is unverified. The George Grantham Bain Collection holds pictures from the New York-based Bain News Service, a photo agency that sold news and feature images to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, so this may have been taken for publication. Dance bands of that period drew crowds to ballrooms and reached listeners through records and radio, and editors liked photographs that showed the faces behind the new popular sound. Because the negative is undated, the exact occasion and the people pictured remain uncertain.
