The caption on this glass negative reads "Spechr Band," a title the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives or caption cards, though the spelling and the identity of the group remain unconfirmed. Bain's agency supplied news pictures to newspapers in New York beginning around 1899, so the plate most likely dates to the early twentieth century, when press photographers relied on large glass negatives for sharp detail. The record gives no date, so the occasion is uncertain, but the glass format itself is worth noticing, since it preserved fine texture that later film could not always match.
