Charles Evans Hughes, the New York lawyer and statesman who later served as Secretary of State and Chief Justice of the United States, is named here as he steps off the liner *Pan American*. The record gives no date, and its title comes from data the Bain News Service recorded on the negatives or caption cards, which has not been independently verified. The Bain News Service was a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so its glass negatives document the daily work of press photography. Pictures like this one show how arrivals at the waterfront were covered for a public eager to see public figures in person.
