Amelita Galli-Curci, the Italian coloratura soprano, is the sitter this glass negative is catalogued under, though the Bain caption cards that supplied the name are unverified, and the record gives no date. Galli-Curci became one of the most popular singers in the United States after her American debut with the Chicago Opera in 1916, and she later performed at the Metropolitan Opera. Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news and celebrity pictures in the early twentieth century, made many portraits of performers like her. The collection preserves those glass plates as a record of how stage personalities were presented to the public in that period.
