The name on this glass negative, Galli-Curci, most likely refers to Amelita Galli-Curci, the Italian coloratura soprano who became a star in the United States after her 1916 debut with the Chicago Opera. The record notes that the title comes from unverified Bain News Service data, so the sitter and date should be treated as provisional. Bain's New York agency produced large numbers of negatives in the early twentieth century, covering theater, music, politics and everyday life for newspapers and magazines. Galli-Curci's Metropolitan Opera appearances and popular phonograph recordings later made her one of the best-known singers of her era.
