The record names the sitter as Galli-Curci, most likely the coloratura soprano Amelita Galli-Curci, though the catalog marks that title as unverified. Born in Milan, she became a major American concert and opera star in the early 1920s through her Metropolitan Opera appearances and a wide following for her phonograph recordings. The negative is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, the glass-plate archive of the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that photographed theater, music and public figures. The record gives no date, so the sitting can only be placed within the agency's active years.
