The record title, Kelp, St. L. -A, comes from Bain News Service labels on the negative or its caption card, and the Library of Congress notes that this wording has not been verified, so the subject and place remain uncertain. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and its negatives from the early 1920s make up much of the George Grantham Bain Collection. Glass negatives of this small size were a common working format for press photographers of the period, and the 1922 date places the image in the years when the agency was still busy supplying daily papers.
