The title points to the Goldman Band, a New York concert ensemble founded in 1911 by cornetist and conductor Edwin Franko Goldman. For decades the band gave free summer concerts on the Mall in Central Park, drawing large crowds of ordinary New Yorkers. The record's title comes from unverified notes written by the Bain News Service, the photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, so the subject and date should be treated as provisional. The glass negative format is typical of Bain's work from the early twentieth century, when photographers still favored the sharp detail that glass plates allowed.
