Mary Pickford, the Canadian-born actress who became one of the most famous faces of the silent screen, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of celebrities, politicians and news events, and Pickford was a frequent subject in the 1910s and early 1920s, when her films made her one of the biggest stars in America. The record gives no date for this negative, and the title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negative or its card, which was not always verified. Glass plates like this one preserved the fine detail that made Bain's pictures useful to editors.
