The title on this glass negative, "Queen Rumania," points to Queen Marie of Romania, though the record notes that the identification comes from unverified caption data from the Bain News Service. Marie, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, became queen when her husband, Ferdinand, took the throne in 1914, and she became one of the best-known royal women of the interwar years. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency active in the early twentieth century, sent its images to newspapers, so its negatives record the public faces of many figures from that period.
