Carl W. Riddick is the only detail the record gives for this glass negative, and that name comes from caption cards that the Library of Congress has not independently verified. The plate has no date, so its exact moment is unknown. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's glass negatives are valued for documenting the people and events that filled American news in those years, and this portrait is best read as one example of that press work.
